Abstract

The goal of this project attempts to address the high use of emergency medical services and emergency departments for management of chronic conditions. It establishes that diabetes and hypertension are the two highest causes of patient concern in the Treasure Valley. The role of a paramedic has been to respond to emergency calls, but a more proactive stance was taken in an attempt to prevent use of emergency settings for management of chronic illnesses. Free blood glucose and blood pressure screenings were provided to the community of Canyon County, Idaho by paramedics in several sessions in an attempt to educate patients on these two illnesses as well as provide resources for definitive care.
