Abstract

Beginning band students are easily distracted during periods of rehearsal in which they are not playing. As a beginning band director, it is difficult to utilize the entirety of a class period for all students. It is necessary to provide clear instructions for how students should spend their downtime. Using a workbook that incorporates establishing classroom routines, reflection, goal-setting, theory review and instrument information has been helpful in my classroom to keep students focused. Utilizing this workbook resulted in a decrease in time I spent redirecting students to stay on task, and improved theory understanding.
