Abstract
Purpose: In recent years, depressive symptoms are more prominent than other psychological problems among Chinese high school students. Cognitive flexibility impairment is one of the important cognitive impairments in depression. The four-way boxing practice has the characteristics of rich content of action and various forms of practice.
Methods: This study used the method of literature, mathematical statistics, questionnaire and experiment, and four-way boxing practice as the intervention.
Results: The total score of the cognitive flexibility scale was negatively correlated with the scores of the self-rating depression scale (all P’s < 0.05). The cognitive flexibility of high depression prone high school students was significantly lower than that of low depression prone high school students. The results showed that: (1) In the self-rating depression scale, the total score of the experimental group was significantly lower than that of the pre-test (P < 0.05), but there was no significant change in the control group; (2) In the cognitive flexibility scale, the total score and the controllable subscale scores of the experimental group were significantly higher after the test than before the test (P < 0.05), and the scores of the selective subscale after the test were significantly higher than before the test (P < 0.05), but there were no significant changes in the control group; (3) In Stroop color word test, the post-test response of the experimental group was significantly lower than that of the pre-test (P < 0.05), while the control group had no significant change (P > 0.05); In the Wisconsin card test, the reaction time of the experimental group was significantly lower than that of the pre-test (P < 0.05), and there was no significant change in the control group.
Conclusion: There is a negative correlation between depression tendency and cognitive flexibility in high school students, and the four-way boxing practice has a positive effect on cognitive flexibility in high school students with depression tendency. The four-way boxing exercise can improve the conversion function and refresh function, improve the thinking set, and enhance the adaptability and execution ability in the constantly changing task of high school students with depression tendency. In the encouragement and praise, the self-esteem and self-confidence of depression-prone high school students were improved; In hand, eye, body, Fa and step coordination, it improved the ability to focus and distribute attention, thereby improving cognitive flexibility and depressive symptoms.
