Abstract

Accidental falls can present a large functional and financial burden among people over the age of 65. Compensatory strategies in response to “challenging” conditions are more pronounced in older adults. The purpose of this research study is to compare neuromechanics of young and older adults. Compensatory strategies and cautious gait for slick surfaces is seen across ages. Older adults exhibit cautious gait and modified joint motion, muscle co-contraction, and loading response in anticipation of challenging conditions. Completion of results from this research study may inform future research, analysis, and intervention regarding age and condition effects on accidental fall risk factors.
