Abstract
We are dependent on data technologies. Algorithms drive your car, recommend your favorite music and TV shows, and anticipate your Google searches. The power of this technology comes from its ability to determine a large part of what we see and how we understand democratic goods and values. How did this happen and who are the people behind the technology? This research begins to tell the story of data technologies from the perspectives of individuals working within two data networks: The National Science Foundation’s Hubs and Spokes and Bloomberg Philanthropy’s What Works Cities.
