Abstract
My work is an investigation into my past and deals with questions of masculinity with undertones of humor. My past experiences growing up in rural Minnesota and my time in the Marine Corps inform my work.
Transitioning from the structured life in the military to a civilian came with unknown struggles and I learned I couldn’t be the person I was trained to be.
I cast sugar 2x4’s to show the tensions and unexpected experiences. Sugar is sweet but consuming this much would be toxic, like the level of masculinity expected in the Marines that doesn’t work in the civilian realm.
