Abstract

In my poster, I plan to explore the impact of Harriet Prescott Spofford (1835-1921) on the short story genre, to argue that she is a writer who did not deserve to be left behind but is worthy of further recognition. Using her short story “Circumstance” as a primary example of her works, I focus on her romantic and gothic themes of how she both followed a preexisting genre while adding her own style and elements. One significant element often explored by scholars is the unique voice that she gives her female characters. “Circumstance” is a perfect example of this, with it being discussed how gender expectations are subverted, with the woman’s voice in the story embodying power and protection. She began her career publishing her works in magazines anonymously as a means of providing for her family, like many women writers of the time. While being a fairly popular figure during her time, after her death, she faded into obscurity. I find it interesting how she explores the female voice in her works during an era where it was less valued, especially considering the way her voice as a writer was diminished both during and after her life.
