Abstract

The severity of disasters worldwide are increasing due to population growth in hazard prone areas and a changing climate is exacerbating these events. Rural communities often have the least capacity for preparation and are constantly responding to disasters rather than developing strategies for mitigation. To address these challenges, the Boise State Hazard and Climate Resilience Institute (HCRI) is partnering with the City of Kamiah (Idaho) on a resilience assessment and resilience strategy roadmap. The resilience assessment will holistically assess and outline steps to address Kamiah’s community resilience needs and identify the societal, economic, and environmental stresses that compromise Kamiah’s quality of life and capacity for resilience. Our project outcomes, developed with and for community partners, will lay the foundation for a prioritized list of feasible, actionable projects that will serve to strengthen the city and region.
