Abstract
In my presentation I will be discussing practical effects in movies and television. Showing images and videos of my own work, from concept through the sculpting and painting process and the effect in action on film. I hope to illuminate the often overlooked work that goes into many of the most memorable films, as well as discussing the current state of practical effects with the introduction of computer graphics imaging (CGI).
The presentation will cover a brief history of effects in film from the early 20’s through the introduction of digital technology and near drop off in practical effects. Leading up to what has become a revival in practical character and set design, and a newfound admiration for the craft. I will discuss a few examples of groundbreaking visual effects from each decade and the men and women behind the work.
