Abstract
For a research project called Realist Art and Music, we will be examining how art and music during the post-Civil War period reflected the changes occurring in the United States and the common opinions toward these developments. One aspect of our project will specifically research how landscape realist paintings and photography represented the controversy of transportation, such as railways, during this time. Another angle will be analyzing how realist art portrayed the present fashion and ideals of the post-Civil War period. The project will also examine how the African American and slave roots of folk music can be seen throughout literary realism. Examining folk music and realist art in this way will reveal many of the important issues from 1865-1910.
