Abstract
A few weeks ago I had dinner with a family friend whom I haven’t seen in years and she asked me a question that for many years would have conjured in me a kind of sickening existential dread. The question itself is benign enough and a natural one considering that we hadn’t seen each other in quite some time: “What are your plans for the future?” Happily, on this occasion I was relieved to be able to respond with confidence: “I want to continue teaching.” This particular friend had taught both high school and college drama, therefore I naively assumed that my answer would find a sympathetic and receptive audience.
