Abstract

The intent of this project is to create a polymer that allows trace chemicals in unsafe water to be detected and measured through the degradation of the polymer shell. The idea of the process is that the key chemical would degrade the integrity of the shell, allowing Diet Coke to physically react through nucleation with the pores of the candy surface. After that, the pictures taken of the surface are analyzed to find a distinct amount of area exposed, and a distinct amount of the reaction’s foam. With those two variables, a direct rate of reaction per mm^2 of exposed area, and amount of foam pixels is created. The experiment is intended to be created as cheaply as possible, to allow the use in low income areas such as third world countries. The end goal is to be able to measure how much of the dangerous chemical there is in the water, to prevent the ingestion of unsafe water in third world countries.
