Abstract

Through a scholarship awarded by the Higher Education Research Council (HERC) and the Idaho State Board of Education, I had the opportunity to experience undergraduate research and joining Dr. Pera’s research team in the Department of Computer Science.

The focus of my work was the design and development of an information retrieval tool that assists Book It Forward, a non-profit organization, in managing children books that they receive as donations. The goal of this project was to enable Book It Forward to swift from the manual handling of their donations information into a more digital access of the information that they need about the book donations, as well as help them manage volunteers’ activity.

The outcome of the project was an online application that interacts with a database which stores all the information that Book It Forward needs. The application is also secure so that only the members of Book It Forward can gain access to their data. With this tool we were able to tackle the problem of access to information and management of information for the benefit of Book It Forward.
