Abstract
The Web in general, and online news media in particular, is a vast source of information that is currently underutilized in educational settings. LITERATE (Locating Informational Texts for Engaging Readers And Teaching Equitably) is a project to help K-12 teachers find current, authentic readings from sources on the Internet to supplement their work in the classroom. We combine information retrieval with text analysis to locate texts relevant to a curricular topic, assess their suitability for use in the classroom, and provide the teacher with information to help evaluate whether a text meets their needs.
