As Chuck Scheer's photograph illustrates, Boise State fans do take their Broncos seriously. Ten years after the football team's national championship, intercollegiate athletics at BSU are as popular as ever. And some aspects of BSU sports, such as longtime boosters and the rivalry with the University of Idaho, have been around for decades. But BSU athletics-both men's and women's-have undergone unique and innovative changes in recent years, too. In this issue FOCUS looks forward and backward-at BSU sports.

Small towns like Shoshone, photographed by Glenn Oakley, have long been romanticized as calm, peaceful domains free of the troubles plaguing big cities. And much of that is true. But small towns in Idaho are undergoing dramatic upheavals these days. Idaho's traditional industries .. . agriculture, mining and logging ... are not as stable as they were a generation ago. What's a community to do? Diversify and tap into the educational system, say a host of state leaders. It's working in towns that have organized and hustled to survive in these changing times. In this issue, FOCUS looks at the health of small-town Idaho.

Compared to America's urban areas, Idaho is relatively crime-free. That is not to say that the Gem State is immune to society's ills. Overcrowded prisons, domestic violence and illegal drugs are just some of the problems facing the state's law-enforcement officials in the 1990s. On the surface, Idahoans appear to be sailing on tranquil seas. But, as depicted in Glenn Oakley's photograph, there are menacing undercurrents to the state's peace and prosperity.
