Abstract
It’s said there is no such thing as a casual hockey fan. Perhaps unexpectedly, these largely blue-collar fans are the first to insist on proper etiquette during the professional hockey game. But what are those rules? While some behavior guidelines are imposed by the arena’s management, most hockey rules of etiquette are unwritten, unspoken, but heavily enforced during games. In this study, crowd etiquette during professional ECHL and NHL hockey games was observed. Reactions to violations of hockey etiquette protocol were noted and conclusions drawn in context of researchers’ knowledge of hockey rules of etiquette. Results provide insight regarding what lines, if any, may be crossed by fans during hockey games.
