Abstract
This paper articulates a qualitative approach using NVivo software, to critical discourse analysis derived from neoliberal theories, commodity fetishism and media agenda setting. The possibilities of this approach are displayed through a case study of the discourses produced by local news media in Boise Idaho as LGBTQ advocates have pushed for policy changes over the last decade. Proponents of the LGBTQ-inclusive policies represented themselves as Idaho citizens fighting to preserve rights of LGBTQ people and that benefits of such policy change would produce a better economy. The analysis traces the emergence and dynamic interplay of liberal, pro-neoliberal and conservative rhetorical moves in this battle for LGBTQ rights in Idaho.
