Abstract

In the last 30 years our lives have been transformed by the digital revolution. The changes in work and daily living habits during this revolution have been as dramatic as those that occurred during the Industrial Revolution. Video streaming, digital cameras, smartphones, the Internet, and tablet computers present a dizzying array of possibilities and promises for literacy learning and literacy demands. The digital universe has fundamentally changed the way individuals and groups communicate and collaborate. As we live through the digital revolution it can be hard to get a fix on the horizon, to know what direction to head, and which tools and techniques will be useful. However, one thing is certain; holding on to the past will be self-defeating. The teachers we work with live in the digital world and must be prepared to use and teach about new literacies effectively.
