Abstract

Memorial Day, Klink's daughter drives him to a gathering at the state of Idaho veterans' cemetery. The day is bright but chilly, with a motion- and cloud -filled sky and a long row of flags at half-mast, whipping and snapping in the wind. His cane doesn't bother him much, only on lawns and near skateboarders or smiling women. He refuses the offer of a golf cart. Finally, carefully, they take their seats.
