Abstract
Extended Reality (XR), including Virtual, Augmented, and Mixed Reality, together with rapidly advancing Artificial Intelligence (AI), is creating immersive technologies with unprecedented and unpredictable implications for children. As these systems become more integrated into learning, play, and social environments, establishing ethical guidance before widespread adoption is essential. This project investigates two core questions: “What ethical concerns do stakeholders identify regarding children’s research and use of XR/AI?” and “How do these concerns vary across youth populations and contexts?” Using an anticipatory and participatory approach, I’m conducting a series of focus groups exploring potential future uses of XR/AI for children ages 5-12. Participants include parents, professionals, and older siblings from both urban and rural communities. Each group engages with scenario-based prompts illustrating possible XR/AI applications, followed by facilitated discussions about risks, benefits, and expectations. Findings will be compared with parallel studies at other U.S. universities to identify shared themes and population‑specific considerations. This work aims to surface stakeholders’ hopes, concerns, and values, ultimately contributing to the development of ethical standards that guide responsible research, design, and implementation of XR/AI technologies for children.
