Abstract

Circadian rhythm affects key brain chemicals, including melatonin, which is suppressed by light and controlled by the circadian clock, and adenosine, which builds up during wakefulness. Light exposure affects the circadian rhythm through its connection to wakefulness and sleepiness. Artificial light in the environment alters the natural sleep-wake cycle. While artificial light sources consist of abrupt on/off transitions, natural sunlight has a gradual transition, for example, the gradual changes with a sunrise or sunset. This study aims to determine if there is a difference in the effect of abrupt and gradual changes in light on the circadian rhythm. We will analyze existing research to inquire about the effect of light exposure on the brain. We anticipate finding a link between gradual light exposure and a better sleep cycle.
