Abstract

For the Undergraduate Research Showcase, my project focuses on the growing need for speech-language pathologists (SLPs) in the United States, with a particular emphasis on the shortage of bilingual SLPs. There is an increasing number of bilingual and multilingual individuals, and as a result, there is a greater need for professionals who can provide appropriate and effective services. Even with this information, the number of bilingual SLPs available has not kept up with this demand, creating challenges in assessment, diagnosis, and treatment for patients from diverse language backgrounds.

Using an interdisciplinary approach, this project highlights the value of fields such as Spanish, sociology, and psychology in helping prepare students interested in speech-language pathology. Drawing from a variety of skills and perspectives can lead to a deeper understanding of individuals, their unique needs, and the best ways to support them.

Through research and interviews with professionals in the field, this project aims to emphasize the importance of greater awareness and better preparation for future professionals. I am passionate about this topic because I plan to pursue this field and continue learning how to support individuals from diverse backgrounds to become confident communicators.
