Coral Reef Restoration Methods and Assisted Evolution

Abstract

Coral is among the most important marine ecosystems, providing essential ecological functions, habitat for thousands of marine species, and acting as a large carbon sink. However, rising ocean temperatures and ocean acidification have increased the severity and frequency of coral bleaching worldwide. Coral relies on a symbiotic relationship with zooxanthellae, a photosynthetic alga that provides energy for the coral while the coral provides protection in return. When coral becomes stressed due to rising temperatures or acidification, it will expel the zooxanthellae, leading to a large reduction in energy supply and potential mortality. This project explores the potential for enhancing coral reef systems through the introduction and breeding of heat resilient coral species in areas that have experienced significant bleaching. My research will examine current research and literature on coral bleaching, restoration strategies such as selective breeding and transplantation, and long-term viability. I expect to identify the restoration methods most effective in increasing survivability and resilience under changing ocean conditions. Understanding how resilient coral can withstand these harsh conditions will lead to great advances in reef recovery and conservation strategies, maintaining their important ecological functions in a changing climate.
