Human Development Impact on Nest Site Selection in American Kestrels

Abstract

Habitat fragmentation and loss are well-known to be some of the largest threats facing animal species. The effects of these anthropogenic effects are not well studied on species considered more common, as opposed to the greater research focus given to vulnerable species. The American Kestrel (Falco sparverius) is widely distributed across North America and is easily observed, being relatively tolerant of urbanization. A total of 51 nest boxes from the study system have been selected and monitored using a combination of direct human observations and remote observations via cameras. By comparing the date of nest site occupation to the percent land area developed in a one-kilometer radius of the box, we determined the effects of urbanization on kestrel nesting location preference. The expected outcome was that more developed areas would be occupied later into the nesting season, however preliminary data analysis shows that there is little correlation between the two. These results may be applicable to other species affected by human encroachment, as the kestrel’s position as a tertiary consumer makes this species a better indicator of human impact than those of lower trophic levels.
