Abstract

Introduction / Background

Oral surgery is an essential specialty within dentistry focused on treating complex conditions involving the mouth, teeth, and jaw. A key challenge in this field is providing effective patient care while managing patient anxiety and discomfort associated with surgical procedures. Poor communication and lack of preparation can negatively impact patient experience and outcomes.

Understanding how clinical support roles contribute to patient care is important for improving overall treatment quality. Assistants play a critical role in preparing patients, supporting procedures, and maintaining efficient workflows. This project explores how hands-on experience in an oral surgery setting contributes to improved patient care and clinical understanding.

Objectives

  • To develop practical skills in patient care within an oral surgery setting
  • To understand how communication and clinical preparation impact patient experience
  • To gain hands-on experience with surgical assisting and clinical workflows
  • To evaluate how support roles contribute to efficiency and patient outcomes

Methods / Experimental Design

This project is based on an ongoing internship conducted in a private oral surgery practice. The approach is observational, focusing on skill development and workflow analysis in a clinical setting.

Daily responsibilities include assisting during oral surgery procedures, preparing and sterilizing instruments, setting up treatment rooms, and interacting with patients before and after procedures. Patient interactions include helping explain procedures, providing reassurance, and supporting post-operative instructions.

Exposure includes a variety of procedures, such as tooth extractions, implant placements, and zygomatic arch replacement. Repeated participation in these procedures allows for consistent observation of patient responses and clinical techniques.

Outcomes are assessed through reflection on skill development, communication effectiveness, and understanding of patient care processes. This design provides practical insight into how clinical teams contribute to efficient and patient-centered care.
