Nuclear Energy Developments at the Idaho National Laboratory

Abstract
The Idaho National Laboratory (INL) plays a central role in advancing nuclear energy technology through innovation, strategic partnerships, and long-term sustainability efforts. Current projects at INL include the development of microreactors, integration of artificial intelligence, as well as radioactive waste management, and it is the purpose of this poster to provide a brief, approachable overview of each of these. In summary, microreactors are small, portable, and carbon-free nuclear reactors designed for flexible deployment in niche applications or settings unsuitable for larger operations. Additionally, INL is partnered with NVIDIA under the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Genesis Mission to accelerate advanced reactor development using artificial intelligence across the reactor lifecycle, from design to operation, aiming to reduce development timelines while improving performance. Lastly, the DOE selected the Idaho Environmental Coalition (IEC), which manages cleanup operations to meet regulatory requirements and address contamination, to direct nuclear waste management at INL. Ongoing research emphasizes safer transportation, monitoring, and disposal of nuclear waste, all to maintain the 1995 Idaho Settlement Agreement. In all, these initiatives demonstrate the Idaho National Laboratory’s comprehensive approach to advancing nuclear energy while prioritizing safety, efficiency, and environmental responsibility.
