Abstract
INSECTA sits at the intersection of data and design, using motion graphics to communicate ecological information through visually engaging designs. The project developed a mini-series of short-form videos focused on five native Idaho bugs, integrating biological and behavioral research and identification information. Through the combination of 2D and 3D animation, the work translates complex scientific information into an accessible and intriguing format, serving a variety of users through visual communication techniques.
A key component of the project is the development of a flexible design identity, maintaining consistency across the series while allowing for variation in the representation of individual species through motion and static formats. Information is embedded directly within motion and graphical elements (kinetic typography, 3d bug modeling, and diagrams), encouraging viewers to engage observationally rather than traditional text-based instruction.
The project leverages passive learning to access audiences, using short-form, visual content to communicate information in intriguing yet digestible segments. By integrating educational information within motion and design, INSECTA supports informal learning while fostering curiosity and sustained viewer attention. Ultimately, this project demonstrates the potential of motion design to expand approaches to environmental education and public understanding of local insects.
