Abstract

We expect this research project to investigate the multi-level factors which influence the accessibility and quality of public transportation systems across diverse socioeconomic areas. Using the Social-Ecological Model as a theoretical framework, this study will examine how individual, interpersonal, community, societal, and policy levels interact to create disparities in transit equity. The analysis will focus on comparing how zoning laws, state funding for transit, and regional economic development plans shape the foundational infrastructure of public systems. By comparing high-income and low-income areas, the project aims to identify specific barriers ranging from personal safety concerns and social norms to physical neighborhood connectivity, which may hinder or facilitate efficient travel. The findings from this research are intended to inform policy recommendations to promote more inclusive and high-quality transportation environments for all community members, regardless of their economic standing.
