Promoting Understanding of Neurodivergency in Children

Abstract

This pilot-study project aimed to educate parents and families about neurodivergency in children by increasing awareness, promoting understanding, and providing practical support strategies. An electronic tri-fold informational handout was developed to present key concepts, common signs to watch for, and practical strategies for supporting neurodivergent children in the home. To evaluate its effectiveness, an anonymized survey was distributed to parents using a HIPAA compliant messaging app, which yielded 22 responses.

Findings indicated overall positive reception of the handout. A majority of participants (54.5%) reported being very satisfied, while the remaining respondents reported being satisfied. Parents appreciated the inclusion of practical at-home strategies that could be implemented in the home. Additionally, 31.8% of respondents indicated that the pamphlet encouraged them to seek further information. The handout received an average rating of 4.14 out of 5 in the parents’ confidence in feeling better equipped to discuss neurodivergency with educators and family members. In the suggestion and feedback section, parents communicated the strengths in accuracy and layout. In possible future informational pamphlets, parents suggested incorporating QR codes for additional resources, expanding content to include more neurodivergent conditions, and even differentiating between developmental milestones and reasons for concern.

Overall, the project demonstrates that accessible and concise educational materials can effectively support parent understanding and engagement.
