Abstract
Additive manufacturing of Two Dimensional (2D) nanomaterials is a new avenue for creating electronics cheaper and faster than before; by removing the need for photolithography induced masks. However, creating nanosheets (NS) with low cost and high yield is still being a challenge. In this project, we utilize an efficient electrochemical exfoliation for scalable production of 2D MoS2 and hBN suitable for additive manufacturing. This process depends on the intercalation and expansion of gas pockets developing between layers bound by van her Waals bonds under constant current in an electrolyte solution. Further exfoliation through sonication and shearing will separate more layers, allowing for greater yield. We have utilized a bipolar electrochemical exfoliation to create hBN NS, which is easier to make due to the aqueous electrolyte solution. Through cascade centrifugation, the NS can be separated based on number of layers and then formulated into an ink to print onto different substrates. We also characterize these materials through UV-Vis-NIR spectroscopy to understand the yield and optical band gap calculations. This work confirms its potential for developing scalable high-quality NS for additive manufacturing of electronics.
