Abstract

In the New Product Development Lab, I’ve worked on materials research, prototyping, and manufacturing methods to turn early ideas into real products. I’ve worked with entrepreneurs in the Pacific Northwest, taking rough sketches or even just conversations and turning them into designs that solve specific problems. Through multiple iterations and prototypes, I use the engineering design process and learned manufacturing methods to move these ideas closer to being released on the market.

One project I’ve worked on is Barqhook, a semi-permanent backpack hook. I learned and then used CAD and static strain simulations along with materials research to find a material that meets performance needs while staying cost-effective. After selecting the material, I investigated different manufacturing options and chose water-jet cutting because it provides precise cuts while still being affordable.
