Abstract
This research, supported by the American SIDS Institute, focuses on developing a flexible computer model to assess infant hazards during bedsharing by measuring mattress surface displacement. To account for the asymmetric deformities of mattresses under weight, physical experiments were conducted with loads ranging from 0 to 70 Newtons, and the resulting displacement curves were modeled using two separate exponential equations to ensure a highly reliable fit. Current work involves simulating adult weight distribution across various sleeping postures, including back, front, and side positions, to observe localized sinking patterns. By combining these adult models with infant-parent bedsharing simulations, the study aims to identify hazardous tilt angles and establish comprehensive safety ratings for different sleep surfaces, ultimately providing parents with data-driven insights to mitigate potential hazards.
