Riparian Restoration Along the Boise River

Abstract

Riparian zones along rivers serve important ecological functions, providing habitat to wildlife, improving water quality, and slowing erosion. Due to intensive land use in the Treasure Valley, much of the historic riparian habitat in the region has been lost, and the remaining fragments have been heavily degraded by development and the spread of invasive species. At the Diane Moore Nature Center, efforts are being made to restore this crucial habitat along the Boise River. Some of these management strategies include controlling noxious weeds, propagating native trees and shrubs, and dispersing seeds of locally adapted native forbs and graminoids. The aims of these restoration efforts are to increase biodiversity and improve the overall quality of wildlife habitat within the riparian corridor on the Boise River.
