Abstract

My project’s intended topic and goal is to conduct a research project based on multilingualism—more specifically the use of the indigenous language Nahuatl in central Mexico within the communities and the education system. I plan to read linguistic research about this indigenous language, historical documents, and use the internet to find real life examples of people using Nauhuatl in a natural setting. I think this research project ties seamlessly into the content of Spanish 498, wherein, the course focuses on multilingualism in our world and more specifically that of Spanish and how it is influenced by other languages. This research project will highlight the influence that Nahuatl has had on Spanish and other languages.

The final project for this course is a research paper and presentation in front of my peers, but I plan to use this final project to also present my findings at the Undergraduate Research Showcase. This will give me an opportunity to explore how to present the same information to different audiences and how to effectively address the public in my first and second language.
