Abstract
The Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) research project investigates different routes that can be taken to limit the release and capture of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, lowering climate change and the world's carbon footprint. The main types of carbon capture include: post-combustion, pre-combustion, oxy-fuel combustion, and direct air capture, which is normally then stored underground. Today, the stored CO2 is mainly used in enhanced oil recovery and in greenhouses, using CO2 to grow plants/crops year-round in discouraging climates. CO2 can be produced into building materials, fuel, and even clothes, with potentially a lot more things in the future. All of this still comes at a cost, with a range from about $100 to $250 per ton, with direct air capture reaching up to $1,900 per ton. Roughly 140,000 tons of CO2 are captured daily, with $4-$8 billion spent yearly. Funds for CCS research and related programs totaled $5.3 billion over the 2011-2023 period from Federal Financial Support. More recently, in 2021, Congress provided $8.2 billion in advance funding for CCS programs over the 2022–2026 period. Last, federal tax credits. In 2022, the credits were expanded, and it is projected that the federal government will collect about $5 billion less in taxes over the 2023–2027 period due to the credit.
