Adverse Health Effects of Blue Light Exposure

Abstract

Blue light exposure has increased significantly with the widespread use of technology, specifically phones, tablets, and computers. While blue light plays an important role in regulating circadian rhythm and promoting alertness during the day, excessive use, especially at night, has been associated with several adverse health outcomes. The goal of this study is to identify these various adverse health outcomes and identify potential intervention strategies. Evening blue light exposure can suppress melatonin production delaying and disrupting sleep quality, leading to circadian rhythm disturbances. Chronic sleep disruption may negatively affect brain health, cognitive performance, hormone regulation, and mental health, including increased risk for anxiety and depressive symptoms. Prolonged exposure may also contribute to digital eye strain and overall worse eye health, characterized by dryness, irritation, and visual fatigue. Research and new evidence has concentrated on the timing and intensity of exposure. Some ways to mitigate blue light effects are limiting screen use before bed, enabling blue light filters or “night mode” settings on your phone or device, wearing blue light glasses, and prioritizing exposure to natural daylight during morning hours. Understanding the balance between beneficial and harmful effects of blue light is essential for promoting sleep health, neurological function, and overall well being.
