Abstract
This research examines the fictional culture of Cvstodia from the 2019 indie metroidvania game Blasphemous, highlighting how a tangible and realistic culture can be portrayed through worldbuilding, narrative storytelling, and real world influence. The main focus of this ethnographic approach is to highlight how the game utilizes religion. The game is heavily influenced by Spanish Catholicism, which can be seen in the art, music, characters, architecture, lore, and game design. Previous research on this topic has focused on large MMO’s like World of Warcraft or games with multiple iterations like Halo, whereas Blasphemous is a small indie game, with one recent sequel. By examining how the game utilizes different techniques to portray the culture of Cvstodia, we can begin to piece together a deeper understanding of how the developers were influenced, and why. Through the use of deep virtual ethnographic exploration and historical research this project aims to showcase how developers are successful in creating a rich and believable fictional culture. Furthermore, this research aims to broaden the scope of ethnographic study, applying it in an interdisciplinary manner to the realms of game development, art, and storytelling.
