Abstract

Habitat loss and destruction continues to reduce biodiversity across ecosystems. One area experiencing these impacts is the Diane Moore Nature Center located in Southeast Boise. This semester, our work focused on habitat restoration efforts at this site. One big goal this semester was plant propagation by taking cuttings of native tree and shrub species. Cuttings were first soaked in water to promote root growth, then potted and maintained for fall planting. This process supports the re-establishment of native vegetation and promotes overall ecosystem diversity. Along with plant restoration, we worked to improve fish habitat, water quality, and native vegetation within the side channel by placing large log structures at an angle to the direction of flow. These structures will provide excellent habitat for juvenile fish, trap fine sediments, and promote native plant growth which will stabilize channel banks. Together, these efforts represent important steps towards restoring a healthy riparian system that supports a diverse range of birds, fish, insects, and many other species native to Idaho.
