Abstract

The Engineering Innovation Studio is a hands-on resource available for students across multiple engineering disciplines at Boise State University. By providing access to manufacturing tools including milling machines, welding equipment, 3D printers, and more, it encourages students to apply theoretical concepts and classroom knowledge to hands-on fabrication. While most undergraduate research involves a definable hypothesis with measurable outcomes, this work focuses more on experiential learning. Over the course of the semester, technical skills were developed across a wide range of manufacturing equipment, alongside mentoring other students as they worked on their own projects and skill development. This experience showed that helping students effectively required not only technical knowledge, but also the ability to adjust explanations and instructions based on different skill levels. Overall, this experience highlighted how hands-on lab environments can help students develop not only technical skills, but also engineering focused communication and problem solving skills.
