Emotional Impacts of the Bryan Kohberger Homicides on Boise State Students

Abstract

The Bryan Kohberger homicides are a topic that has readily increased in popularity within true crime, becoming a significant reference point in conversations surrounding college campus safety. Despite the extensive media attention and public interest this case has generated, there remains a lack of research examining the lasting emotional impacts towards those affected, especially those in close proximity to where the homicides originated. Specifically, the study aims to understand how exposure to a high-profile violent crime shapes students’ feelings of anxiety, fear, and vulnerability within their campus environment. The current study utilized brief qualitative interviews amongst Boise State University students to explore how the Kohberger case has influenced factors such as: emotional well-being, perceptions of safety, and overall college experience. The findings of this study will be presented alongside key themes that emerged from participant responses, as well as implications for improving campus safety initiatives and student support services. Limitations of the study, including sample size and scope, as well as directions for future research, will also be addressed.
