Shaping Futures: The Influence of Childhood Experiences on Fertility Intentions and Parenthood Planning

Abstract

This study examines how childhood family experiences influence fertility intentions and the degree to which individuals consciously plan parenthood in adulthood. Specifically, it examines how self-reported early-life family experiences, alongside adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), shape reproductive outcomes. It was hypothesized that higher ACE scores would be associated with earlier age at first birth, while more positive childhood experiences would relate to more intentional parenthood planning; although mixed outcomes have been reported, the expected trend was toward earlier and less structured parenthood among those with higher ACE exposure. Previous research has found that people want fewer children when they experience difficult childhoods, but other research has shown that people exposed to harsh childhoods are more likely to begin reproduction earlier. This study seeks to understand whether planning for parenthood may help explain the differences between preferences for children and earlier reproduction.

Across-sectional survey of women aged 18–45 (n = 150) was recruited through Prolific and administered via Qualtrics. Pearson correlations and negative binomial regression models assessed relationships with age at first birth, desired age at first birth, number of children, and parenthood planning. Results showed a significant negative correlation between ACE scores and age at first birth (r = -0.26, p = 0.038), indicating earlier parenthood with higher ACE exposure. No significant relationships were found with planning or other outcomes. Age significantly predicted number of children (p < 0.001), while ACEs and early-life experiences did not.

Findings suggest ACEs may influence timing of parenthood, while planning and intentions are more strongly shaped by current life factors.
