Design Adaptation for Earthships in Idaho

Abstract
Living off-grid in Idaho is an enticing prospect due to land affordability and the state’s remote, natural beauty. However, off-grid housing often faces long term sustainability challenges, including reliance on expensive utilities and frequent maintenance requirements. Our poster focuses on the Earthship, which is an aesthetically pleasing and self-sufficient home design that answers many of these problems. Earthships are constructed with natural and recycled materials and are designed for energy efficiency. With walls made of tires packed with earth and cooling pipes, Earthships require no active heating or cooling systems and the greywater recycling system gives water multiple uses before being used to grow plants. Additionally, when constructed using recycled glass bottles, the inside of the home is filled with colorful, stained-glass-like light. Despite the benefits of Earthships, implementation in extreme climate conditions such as Idaho requires many adjustments, including more rigid thermal systems and navigating zoning laws. The challenges Earthships face are not a complete limitation as Earthships have been successfully built in Idaho and serve as a sustainable and self-sufficient alternative to standard housing.
