Abstract

In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) is a widely used form of assisted reproductive technology to help people facing fertility challenges. For countless people, it has been a life changing opportunity to build a family. However, when IVF cycles fail, the emotional impact can be profound and long-lasting. Unsuccessful attempts are often associated with increased depression, anxiety, grief, and guilt. Many individuals experience a deep sense of loss, which can lead to social withdrawal and strain within intimate relationships. The repeated cycle of hope, anticipation, and eventual disappointment can create significant psychological stress not only for the individual undergoing treatment but also for those supporting them. In addition to the emotional burden, IVF treatments are physically demanding and financially stressful. This project aims to examine the mental health impacts of failed IVF treatment and explore how these experiences affect individuals emotionally and socially. By reviewing peer-reviewed research and personal accounts, this poster will investigate common psychological outcomes associated with unsuccessful IVF cycles and identify patterns in how individuals cope with these challenges. The goal is to better understand the emotional burden of failed IVF and highlight the importance of integrating mental health support into fertility care. Recognizing and addressing these psychological struggles may help reduce stigma and improve overall patient well-being and treatment experiences.
