Sustainable and Environmentally Friendly Buildings: Earthships

Abstract
Earthships are sustainable and energy-efficient structures that use minimal or renewable resources. Recycled materials such as tires and cans are the main components that create the structure of the Earthships. These materials are abundant and are easily sourced. The structure of an Earthship is usually banked in dirt to retain natural heating and cooling, requiring minimal energy resources, to provide an efficient source of energy, solar panels and wind turbines are used as sources of power. These sources can also be helpful in being independent from the electrical grid and public water sources. One of the downsides of Earthships is the initial building process. Installation of the natural energy sources as well as the labor costs contribute to the high initial cost compared to a regular home. Although Earthships are initially expensive, the overall benefits of resourceful and energy efficient housing can lead to lasting impacts on the environment and on the overall cost of living.
