Abstract

Artificial Intelligence (AI) from Large Language Model (LLM) technology is rapidly expanding. They offer promises of enhancing mundane tasks and altering how we work and learn. This emergent technology has clear benefits, reducing workloads, increasing production output, and quickly resolving conflicts. . However, these benefits come with drawbacks, including, “AI-induced psychosis,” surveillance overreach, and human operators naively trusting AI systems.

Additionally, maintaining these systems requires extensive computational resources. Many data centers are being built to support this technology. These demands of high infrastructure and energy costs raise concerns about long-term economic feasibility. There are also environmental impacts, as training and operating these increasingly larger models consume significant energy and water, contributing to a growing carbon footprint.

This research poster examines the social and environmental impacts of AI with a focus on concerns with modern adaptation, and briefly discusses feasible directions the purveyors of this technology are steering the LLM industry. As these systems continue to shape the future, it is important to responsibly develop AI technology.
