Abstract
Youth sports participation is widely promoted for its physical health benefits; however, its social and psychological impacts often receive less attention. This project explores the benefits of youth sports participation on confidence levels and leadership skills among adolescents. The guiding question is: What does existing research reveal about the relationship between youth sports involvement, self-confidence, and leadership development in adolescents? To address this question, this project examines scholarly studies, peer-reviewed research, and documented case analyses of adolescent social and psychological development in organized sports settings. Existing literature suggests that participation in youth sports can significantly enhance self-esteem, strengthen communication skills, foster teamwork, and develop leadership abilities. Through structured team environments, adolescents are provided opportunities to build responsibility, resilience, and interpersonal competence. This topic is important because confidence and leadership skills contribute to academic achievement, positive peer relationships, and long-term mental well-being. Access to youth sports can therefore function as a social determinant of health, as disparities in availability and resources may influence developmental outcomes and future opportunities for adolescents.
