Abstract

International outlets have been covering the conflict between Israel and Palestine since the Hamas terrorist attack on Oct. 7th, 2023. While news coverage is intended to be unbiased in theory, in practice news coverage is often influenced by the social, historical, cultural, and political influences of the country the news is produced in. To examine these influences, this study conducts a comparative analysis of historically colonizer and colonized countries' news coverage of Israel-Palestine. While some research exists on colonialism’s influence on news, comparative analysis offers insight into how news coverage from colonial countries can replicate or challenge colonial narratives, and to what extent colonizer countries continue to perpetuate colonial narratives. Ethnographic content analysis is used to examine the coverage from two colonizer countries (Germany and the U.S.) and two colonized countries (Ireland and South Africa) to consider the historic influences on coverage from the most read news sites in each country.
