Abstract
The City of Boise’s Climate Action Roadmap upholds a resilient local food system, with community gardens playing a key role. This project evaluates the economic viability of investing in community gardens by identifying barriers, challenges, and community interest. Through a literature review, stakeholder interviews, and a public survey, we assess the costs, benefits, and long-term sustainability of community gardens in Boise. Data collection includes insights from existing garden leaders in the Treasure Valley and responses from residents on accessibility, potential improvements, and funding. Researching other successful models in other cities further informs the findings of this project. The results will provide actionable suggestions for the City of Boise, guiding future investment in community garden projects. Deliverables include a comprehensive report and a visual poster outlining key findings. By integrating economic viewpoints with environmental and social benefits, this project supports data-driven decision making on whether to put resources toward expanding community gardens in Boise.
