Abstract

There is a growing gap between Generation Z and older generations. (e.g., Spencer, 2023). This project explores how misconceptions about Gen Z’s value systems and behaviors contribute to social and emotional development declines. Using Jonathan Haidt and Jesse Graham’s Moral Foundations Theory, along with themes from Dr. April Masarik’s Human Universals Project in the Human Development & Ecology Lab, this research examines how moral values differ across generations and how these differences lead to conflict, misunderstanding, and unnecessary judgement. Misconceptions about Gen Z, such as perceptions of them being “lazy,” “entitled,” or “anxious,” are analyzed in the context of Human Universals’ thematic analysis approach on value systems. This study highlights how older generations’ value systems, communication styles, and behaviors clash with Gen Z’s development, confidence, and overall life experiences, exacerbating intergenerational misunderstandings in areas such as work ethic, mental health, and resilience. Recommendations for change include developing programs to foster constructive intergenerational dialogue, creating policies that advocate for Gen Z’s evolving values, and educating both Gen Z and older generations on important civic and social issues.
