Abstract

Boise has experienced rapid growth, adding 24,000 residents over the past two years. This expansion has led to urban sprawl, impacting the city's environment, economy, and community. Over the past five decades, average summer temperatures have increased by 5.6°F, intensifying the urban heat island effect. In 2022, greenhouse gas emissions rose by 16%, contributing to climate change. Economically, urban sprawl has strained infrastructure and transportation systems. Since 2019, vehicle miles traveled have increased by 26%, resulting in longer commutes and higher transportation costs. Socially, the expansion has reduced access to parks and recreational areas, affecting community well-being. Additionally, sprawl can fragment neighborhoods, impacting social cohesion. To address these challenges, adopting smart growth strategies is essential. Encouraging compact urban development can reduce land consumption. Investing in efficient public transportation can decrease reliance on personal vehicles. Implementing sustainable practices, such as green roofs and permeable pavements, can help manage environmental impacts. Addressing Boise's urban sprawl requires comprehensive planning and community engagement to balance growth with sustainability.
